"According to Native Americans, dreams that humans have while they sleep, are sent by sacred spirits as messages. According to their Legend, in the center of the Dream Catcher there is a hole. Good dreams are permitted to reach the sleeper through this hole in the web. As for the bad dreams, the web traps them and they disappear at dawn with the first light. For some, they try to determine what messages are being past onto them and what the message represents.

The Dream Catcher represents several meanings. All of the decorations and materials used to decorate them, all have a special meaning. A single bead in the middle may represent the spider that is on the web. Scattered beads throughout the web may represent good dreams that may have been caught throughout the night. A feather represents a symbol of breath or air which is attached so it hangs from the center of the ring. It is essential for life. A baby watching the air playing with the feather on her cradleboard was entertained while also being given a lesson on the importance of good air.

This lesson comes forward in the way that the feather of the Owl is kept for wisdom (a woman's feather); & the Eagle feather is kept for courage (a man's feather). This is not to say that the use of each is restricted by gender; but that to use the feather each is aware of the gender properties she/he is invoking. (Indian people, in general, are very specific about gender roles and identity.)

The use of gem stones, in some of the ones we make for sale, is not something that was done by the old ones. Government laws forbid the sale of feathers from our sacred birds. These include ALL Birds of Prey and include Hawk feathers, Bald Eagle feathers, Owl feather, Turkey Vulture feathers, and so on.

Incorporating four gem stones into the Dream Catcher, is used to represent the four directions. Nature represents the spiritual inspiration in each.

When researching the long traditions of oral histories, storytelling has been passed down through the generations; from parent to child, grandparent to grandchild, or from one person to another. This is how the message continues to be passed on to future generations." - what a dream catcher is copied and pasted from History of the Dream Catchers, you can find more about it by going to the link that I will include as my source.

Interesting question, I too have always wondered their meaning.

Meaning behind dream-catcher colors, feathers and beads?

A colorful dreamcatcher
Dreamcatchers are Ojibwa cradle decorations invented in the 1920's. They are crib mobiles, nothing more. They have no special meaning or significance. They are designed to entertain babies as they sway in the breeze. That's ALL they are.

I know new-age people ascribe all sorts of ridiculous notions to them. We find it totally hysterical.

We are totally baffled by non-natives obsession with them. Getting a tattoo of a dream catcher is like getting a tattoo of a baby's pacifier. really. You'll never see an indian with a dreamcatcher tattoo, nor does any indian over the age of 4 own one. The one great thing about people who get dreamcatcher tattoos is that it instantly marks you as someone who has no clue about native culture.

Dreamcatcher meanings? Colors and feathers?

I am getting a dreamcatcher tattoo and I decided I want to get it in color.

I have heard by several people that the color of dreamcatcher has meanings to it. Like the different colored beads have meanings and that different feathers used have different meanings as well. I was wondering if someone could tell me the different meanings of each color and feather.

Anything would be awesome! Thank you in advance :)

What does a dreamcatcher tattoo mean?

The idea of a dream catcher was used by Margaret Salinger, daughter of J.D.Salinger, in her book of memoirs about her father, Dream Catcher: A Memoir.
The Ojibwa believe that a dreamcatcher changes a person's dreams. According to Konrad J. Kaweczynski, "Only good dreams would be allowed to filter through . . . Bad dreams would stay in the net, disappearing with the light of day."[4] Good dreams would pass through and slide down the feathers to the sleeper.
Another version from the same article was, "Luscious dreams pass through the center hole to the sleeping person. The bad dreams are trapped in the web, where they perish in the light of dawn.

There are other versions.

Miley Cyrus has a dreamcatcher tattoo. She said in an interview, it represents HER 4 SIBLINGS - to protect them.

What does the bead on a dreamcatcher mean?

The beads are supposed to hold the bad parts of the dream while good dreams float down the web into the feathers and into your mind. When sunlight hits the beads in the morning the bad dreams are destroyed.

What is the meaning of the dream catcher tattoo?

"Dream Catchers, also known as Spider Web Charms, are believed to trap unimportant or bad dreams that float in the air, pretty much the way a spider traps insects that flies into its web."

The dream catcher originated from Native American culture. Dream catcher tattoos are becoming more and more popular, however the actually meaning of a dream catcher is to alter the types of dreams that a person has. Bad dreams are caught in the dream catcher permanently, while good dreams are allowed to pass through. You know your dream catcher is full when you start having bad dreams again.

Many people have personal reasons for getting a dream catcher tattoo, or any tattoo for that matter. Some for cultural reasons, others for personal reasons or experiences. Personally, I have always been prone to horrible dreams. So I have decided to get my dream catcher tattoo somewhere that is close to my head when I sleep.

If you decide to get this type of tattoo, or any tattoo at all, you should have good reasons. Remember that tattoos are permanent and they are not to be chosen lightly. Never get a tattoo just because it will "look cool" or it is currently in "season." Tattoos are an expression of self and should be a representation of who you are or what you've been through. Also, do not opt for "cheaper" tattoo artists.

The artist can make the tattoo speak for itself. You want to invest in your tattoos as you would invest in a car or home. Do some research, have a few different tattoo artists draw up sketches for you. Do NOT settle on your tattoo. You should never think of your tattoo as "good enough." It should be as breathtakingly elaborate or as simple as you want it to be.

Dreamcatcher history (follow wikipedia)

In some Native American cultures, a dreamcatcher (or dream catcher; Lakota: iháŋbla gmunka, Ojibwe: asabikeshiinh, the inanimate form of the word for "spider" or Ojibwe: bawaajige nagwaagan meaning "dream snare") is a handmade object based on a willow hoop, on which is woven a loose net or web. The dreamcatcher is then decorated with sacred items such as feathers and beads.

Dreamcatchers originated with the Ojibwe people and were later adopted by some neighboring nations through intermarriage and trade. It wasn't until the Pan-Indian Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, that they were adopted by Native Americans of a number of different nations. Some consider the dreamcatcher a symbol of unity among the various Indian Nations, and a general symbol of identification with Native American or First Nations cultures. However, many other Native Americans have come to see dreamcatchers as over-commercialized, offensively misappropriated and misused by non-Natives.

The Ojibwe people have an ancient legend about the origin of the dreamcatcher. Storytellers speak of the Spider Woman, known as Asibikaashi; she took care of the children and the people on the land. Eventually, the Ojibwe Nation spread to the corners of North America and it became difficult for Asibikaashi to reach all the children. So the mothers and grandmothers would weave magical webs for the children, using willow hoops and sinew, or cordage made from plants.

The dreamcatchers would filter out all bad dreams and only allow good thoughts to enter our mind. Once the sun rises, all bad dreams just disappear. American ethnographer Frances Densmore writes in her book Chippewa Customs (1929, republished 1979, pg. 113):

Even infants were provided with protective charms. Examples of these are the "spiderwebs" hung on the hoop of a cradle board. These articles consisted of wooden hoops about 3½ inches in diameter filled with an imitation of a spider's web made of fine yarn, usually dyed red. In old times this netting was made of nettle fiber. Two spider webs were usually hung on the hoop, and it was said that they "caught any harm that might be in the air as a spider's web catches and holds whatever comes in contact with it."

Traditionally, the Ojibwe construct dreamcatchers by tying sinew strands in a web around a small round or tear-shaped frame of willow (in a way roughly similar to their method for making snowshoe webbing). The resulting "dream-catcher", hung above the bed, is used as a charm to protect sleeping people, usually children, from nightmares.

The Ojibwe believe that a dreamcatcher changes a person's dreams. According to Konrad J. Kaweczynski, "Only good dreams would be allowed to filter through… Bad dreams would stay in the net, disappearing with the light of day." Good dreams would pass through and slide down the feathers to the sleeper.

Another explanation of Lakota origin, "Nightmares pass through the holes and out of the window. The good dreams are trapped in the web, and then slide down the feathers to the sleeping person."
